WHAT IS BAILE FUNK
KNOWN FROM RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL:
Rio-Funk,
also known as Favela Funk or Baile Funk (Funk Carioca), is like
the north american HipHop born as a kind of protest movement and
has its origin in the slums (ghettos) of Rio de Janeiro.
As
in the United States, most of the black Brazilians (Afro-Brazilians)
are descendants of slaves brought from Africa.
Also today, many of them are still underprivileged and often discriminated
by their colour.
The
Favelas (Slums) have their own rules. Often they are controlled
by drug dealers which often work hand in hand with the domestic
police. The permanent violence which costs a lot of murdered each
year makes life very hard in this poverty.
The
lyrics, often rapped in slang, are talking about this world of
poverty and violence. And they often denounce these poor life
conditions. Mostly they report about the violence, drugs and sex,
and on the other hand about the wishes of the young Faveladous
of a better life with peace and opportunities.
The
sound is made in the easiest way. Beats are sampled from often
very popular songs, normally they are mixed with traditional influences
in a new arrangement. So elements from traditional Brazilian music
e.g. Samba get mixed with MIAMI BASS, Electro-HIPHOP and Breakbeats.
Because
of this the music is so energetic and authentic. It´s the
latest and hottest sound Brazil has to offer to the world of music
and party.
